A high-level delegation from Japan led by Mr. Katsuyuki Kawai, Member of the House of Representatives of Japan and Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan is scheduled to arrive in Bhutan on 24 September to attend the opening ceremony of the Japan Week in Bhutan.

Japan Week was formally launched on 22 October 2006 in Thimphu during the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bhutan and Japan. It is an annual event organized in Bhutan by Japanese Embassy in New Delhi along with the Japan Foundation. During the Japan Week, cultural events like Japanese cultural performances, Judo, karate and soccer demonstrations, Japanese language seminars, and screening of Japanese films are held. Exchanges between the two sides during the Japan Week have served the very important purpose of supplementing the efforts of the two governments to enhance cooperation in the field of culture, sports, academia and people-to-people contact. Japan Week 2016 is scheduled from 24 September โ€“ 1 October 2016.

As t he Japan Week this year coincides with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bhutan and Japan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Royal Government along with the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs, Tourism Council of Bhutan and Bhutan Post are collaborating with the organizers to ensure the success of the Japan Week
