Application and renewal of Bhutanese passports

APPLICATION FOR PASSPORT/TRAVEL DOCUMENT

The Consulate General facilitates passport/travel document applications. While emergency travel documents are issued by the Consulate General, issuance of new passports and renewal of expired passports are issued by the Passport Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Thimphu. For issuance of emergency travel documents and passports, applications must be submitted to the Consulate General. Alternatively, passports can directly be applied online through www.citizenservices.gov.bt

To apply for Ordinary Passport / Travel Document, the following are required: 

  1. Completed application form. You can download the form here.
  2. Fee of Nu. 1,000/-.
  3. Copy of valid citizenship identity card or identity document issued by the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs.
  4. Valid online Security Clearance Certificate.
  5. Most recent passport-size photograph.

Specification for passport-size photograph

The size of the photograph should be 45 mm x 35 mm with your facial image taking up 70 to 80 % of the photograph and the photograph must be:

  1. white background without border;
  2. portrait style with eyes open and forehead & ears clearly visible;
  3. without flash reflection, tinted lenses and thick frames if you are wearing glasses;
  4. without shadow with sharp and clear focus;
  5. of high quality with no ink marks or creases;
  6. printed on photo-quality paper for photographs taken with a digital camera;
  7. clean with no smudge marks;
  8. glued and not stapled or pinned to the application; and
  9. not older than six months.

Emergency Passport

  1. For the Newborn, emergency passport with one month validity will be issued after submitting the following documents:
    1. Birth certificate from the hospital
    2. Valid passport copies of both the parents.
    3. 2 recent passport size photograph of the child.
    4. USD 20 will be levied as a fee.
  2. For lost/stolen/damage, emergency passport with one month validity will be issued after submitting the following documents:
  1. A copy of the police report from where the passport was stolen or lost must be submitted along with the application form.
  2. Completed application form.
  3. In the event that a passport is damaged, the damaged passport must be submitted.
  4. Copy of valid citizenship identity card or identity document issued by the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs.
  5. 2 recent passport size photograph.
  6. USD 20/- will be levied as a fee.

Emergency passports are issued to facilitate the travel back to Bhutan. Therefore, emergency passports should be surrendered to the Mission and Consular Services Division, Department of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs upon reaching Bhutan.
