Permanent Representative Ambassador Doma Tshering attended the NASA Develop End-of-Summer Bhutan Presentation, held virtually on 12 August 2022. The Presentation was on the project, “Bhutan Agriculture II: Assessing and Developing Focal Crop Masks and Creating Data Collection Protocols using Remotely Sensed Data in Bhutan,” which was undertaken by four Bhutanese students studying in the United States (Wangdrak Dorji, Tenzin Wangmo, Sonam Seldon Tshering, Karma Dorjee).
The project is undertaken as part of the Interagency Agreement between the Royal Government of Bhutan and the U.S. Department of State to strengthen the foundations of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (or STEM) in Bhutan through expanded use of Earth observation information and data. Since June 2020, NASA DEVELOP has been providing opportunities for Bhutanese interns based in the United States to undertake relevant projects using Earth Sciences and satellite technology. Eight projects on Bhutan, including the Bhutan Agriculture II have been completed till date.
Hon’ble Lyonpo Yeshey Penjor, Minister for Agriculture and Forest, Mr. Michael Flores, Dy. Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of State, Dr. Julie Robinson, Deputy Director of NASA Earth Science Division and officials from NASA, the Ministry of Agriculture, and Bhutan Foundation attended the event.
