On the invitation of Smt. Meira Kumar, Speaker of the Lok Sabha of India, Lyonchhen Jigmi Y. Thinley is visiting New Delhi from 18-21 December 2011 to deliver the Fourth Professor Hiren Mukerjee Memorial Lecture. Hon. Lyonchhen will be accompanied by Foreign Secretary Daw Penjo and other senior officials of the Royal Government.
The annual Professor Hiren Mukerjee Memorial Lecture series has been instituted by the Parliament of India in honour of the outstanding parliamentarian, eminent scholar and veteran leader, Prof. Hiren Mukerjee to facilitate enlightened discourse on issues of contemporary relevance as well as challenges. Professor Mukerjee was a member of the Lok Sabha for five consecutive terms from 1952 to 1977.
Past speakers, include prominent personalities in Professor Amartya Sen, Professor Muhammad Yunus and Professor Jagdish Bhagwati, all of whom are internationally renowned.
Hon. Lyonchhen will deliver a lecture on “Gross National Happiness (GNH) : A holistic paradigm for sustainable well-being.” The lecture will be attended by Members of the Parliament and other dignitaries from India.
Hon. Lyonchhen will return to Bhutan on 21st December 2011.
