On the invitation of His Majesty King George Tupou V of Tonga to His Majesty the King of Bhutan, Her Royal Highness Ashi Sonam Dechan Wangchuck will be visiting the Island of Tonga from 30 July to 3 August 2008 to represent His Majesty the King of Bhutan at the Coronation ceremony of His Majesty the King of Tonga.

While Bhutan and Tonga do not have diplomatic relations, the two countries enjoy cordial relations. The presence of Her Royal Highness at this important ceremony will further strengthen the ties of friendship between the two Kingdoms. His Majesty the King of Tonga visited Bhutan last December to personally invite His Majesty the King of Bhutan to attend the former’s Coronation ceremony in Tonga.

His Majesty King George Tupou V ascended to the Throne on 10th September 2006 following the demise of his father His Majesty King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV at the age of 88 years old. The Coronation ceremony is to take place in Nuku’alofa, Tonga on 1st August 2008.
