At the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Lyonpo Dago Tshering, Special Envoy of Hon’ble Lyonchhen visited Cuba from 7th to 10th August 2012.  This is the first official bilateral visit from Bhutan to Cuba since the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries in September 2011.

Lyonpo Dago Tshering called on His Excellency Mr. Esteban Lazo, Vice President of the Republic of Cuba, His Excellency Mr. Marcelino Medina Gonzalez, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and other senior officials of the Cuban government.   His Excellency Mr. Marcos Rodriguez Costa, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs hosted a lunch in honour of the Special Envoy.

During the meetings, Lyonpo and the Cuban dignitaries discussed matters of mutual interest to both countries in the bilateral as well as multilateral field, including Bhutan’s candidature to the UN Security Council for the term 2013-2014.  They also agreed to continue cooperation in the area of health and education through the fielding of Cuban doctors to work in Bhutan and Bhutanese students taking up higher studies in medicine, architecture, and engineering in Cuba.

Both sides expressed satisfaction at the establishment of formal diplomatic relations and the ongoing cooperation between the two countries.  They looked forward to further strengthening the friendly relations and cooperation in the coming years.
