H.E. Mr. M. Shahidul Islam, Secretary General of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is on an introductory visit to Bhutan from 28 October – 01 November 2017.

His Majesty the King granted audience to the Secretary General on 30 October, 2017 at Tashichhodzong.

The Secretary General also called on Hon’ble Lyonchhen Dasho Tshering Tobgay and Hon’ble Foreign Minister Lyonpo Damcho Dorji.

The Hon’ble Foreign Minister extended warm welcome and congratulated him on his appointment as the Secretary General of BIMSTEC. He also expressed confidence in the leadership of the Secretary General in taking the BIMSTEC process forward and reaffirmed the Royal Government’s support and commitment to further consolidating regional cooperation and deepening friendship among the BIMSTEC Member States. Exchanging views on various activities of BIMSTEC such as trade, connectivity and cultural cooperation, Hon’ble Foreign Minister also expressed caution on the proliferation of areas of cooperation and activities to make BIMSTEC process visible, result oriented and beneficial to the people.

H.E. Mr. M. Shahidul Islam nominated by the Government of Bangladesh succeeded H.E. Mr. Sumith Nakandala from Sri Lanka. He assumed office as the Secretary General of BIMSTEC on 21 September 2017.

The Secretary General was accompanied by Mr. Kunzang N. Tshering, Director at the BIMSTEC Secretariat.
