Her Majesty Gyalyum Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck will lead a High Level Bhutanese Delegation to the Nairobi Summit on ICDP25 from the 12-14th of November 2019. Her Majesty will be accompanied by Lyonpo Dechen Wangmo, Minister of Health, and officials of the Royal Government.
Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck was recently presented an award in recognition of Her Majestyโs role as the Goodwill Ambassador of UNFPA for the last 20 years. During the summit Her Majesty will deliver the opening address for the Women Leaders High Level Dialogue. Her Majesty will also be awarding prizes to UNFPA Global and Regional Champions. Her Majesty is scheduled to attend several other high level events and meetings with heads of governments and development partners.
The summit marks the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) which was held in Cairo in 1994, where 179 governments adopted a far sighted plan for advancing human wellbeing by placing the reproductive and sexual health needs of women and men at the center of the development agenda rather than numerical population targets.
The summit is intended to mobilize political will and financial commitments to fully implement the ICPD Programme of Action and bring together heads of states, government and civil society representatives, business and community leaders, academics and experts, and many others interested in the pursuit of sexual and reproductive health and rights. The commitment will be centered around achieving zero preventable maternal mortality, zero unmet needs for family planning information and services, zero sexual and gender based violence and harmful practices against women and girls.
