Visit of H.E. Lyonpo Loknath Sharma, Hon’ble Minister of Economic Affairs, RGoB to Assam and Meghalaya (09 – 17 April 2022)

Hon’ble Lyonpo and H.E. Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, GoI on 11 April 2022.

Upon the invitation of the Government of India, Lyonpo Loknath Sharma, Hon’ble Minister of Economic Affairs led a delegation to the Waterways Conclave 2022 held between 11 – 12 April 2022 at Dibrugarh, Assam.

During the conclave, Lyonpo expressed appreciation for the platform to focus on harnessing the domestic and international potential of the waterways ecosystem in the Northeast region. Lyonpo also highlighted that the many ongoing initiatives of the Government of India to leverage and improve Inland Waterways will go a long way in transforming trade and economic integration in the region. Lyonpo and the members of the Bhutanese delegation participated in various sessions of the Conclave over the course of two days.

On the sidelines of the Conclave, Lyonpo met with H.E. Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and H.E. Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam. They discussed harnessing the full potential of waterways connectivity between India and Bhutan by utilizing Jogighopa, Pandu and Dhubri ports in Assam. This would further help deepen the economic ties between India and Bhutan. Lyonpo also expressed appreciation for the initiatives of the Government of India to develop a multi-modal logistics park at Jogighopa which upon completion would further facilitate regional trade and also benefit Bhutan.

Subsequent to the Waterways Conclave in Dibrugarh, the Hon’ble Lyonpo and delegation visited the riverine ports of Pandu, Jogighopa and Dhubri and met with officials of Inland Waterways Authority of India and Indian Customs.

Lyonpo also called on H.E. Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, the Governor of Assam and Nagaland and H.E. Shri Conrad Sangma, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya during the visit and discussed trade and economic related matters.

 

 

 

 

Lyonpo also met with some Bhutanese students studying in colleges of Assam.

Shri Promod Boro, Chief Executive Member of Bodoland Territorial Council hosted a luncheon in honour of the Hon’ble Lyonpo on 16 April 2022 at Kokrajhar, BTC. 

 

 

On 17th April 2022, the Hon’ble Lyonpo and delegation left for Kolkata to attend the Bengal Global Business Summit 2022.
