Bhutan and Thailand have always enjoyed close bonds of friendship even before the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1989 given the common spiritual heritage in the precious teachings of Lord Buddha and the strong relations at all levels between the two Kingdoms.
The people-to-people interactions between the two countries received an impetus with the introduction of Druk Air flights to Bangkok in 1988. Thailand gradually became a popular destination amongst the Bhutanese for education, medical treatment, trade, leisure, and transit.
With the increasing interactions between the peoples of our two countries and as a means to further strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation between the governments and the peoples of the two countries, Bhutan decided to establish a resident Embassy in Thailand. Accordingly, the Royal Government of Bhutan established the Royal Bhutanese Embassy in Bangkok on 7th July 1997 with Mr. Singye Dorji as the Charge d’affaires.
In 1999, Lyonpo Chenkyab Dorji was appointed as Bhutan’s first resident Ambassador to Thailand. The Ambassador was concurrently accredited to Singapore in 2003, Australia in 2005 (till 2021), and Myanmar in 2012.
The Royal Bhutanese Embassy, Bangkok, represents the political, economic, and cultural interests of Bhutan in these countries. The Embassy also provides consular services to Bhutanese citizens residing in or traveling to Thailand, Myanmar, Singapore, and other ASEAN countries.
